Identify what is already on the bike
A grip change can be a simple replacement or a change to the throttle-side assembly. Establish which job you are buying for. Record the motorcycle’s exact model and year, the throttle housing or aftermarket kit, the existing tube and any handguards. Then decide what you dislike about the present grips: their condition, pattern, outside size or installation system. A useful answer is more specific than wanting the newest-looking rubber.
The two sides do different jobs
Renthal’s motorcycle MX Lock-On instructions identify a left grip that slides onto the handlebar and a separate throttle grip requiring the correct cam. On a conventional twist-throttle motorcycle, distinguish the stationary bar side from the tube that rotates on the throttle side. Do not assume that two visually similar sleeves are interchangeable or that a bicycle or thumb-throttle application establishes motorcycle fit. [1]
For conventional slip-on grips, confirm the specified left and throttle-side bores against the bar and tube. For a lock-on system, confirm the complete assembly rather than only its rubber outside diameter. Ask whether the replacement retains your existing tube or supplies a new one. If the bike has an aftermarket throttle, tell the grip manufacturer; the motorcycle’s original fitment listing may no longer describe the parts installed.
Length needs a clear definition
Renthal describes grip design in terms that include diameter, length, compound, flange flexibility and pattern-related considerations. Those are separate questions. A familiar compound name does not establish that a grip occupies the correct length on your bar or throttle tube. [2]
When comparing listings, ask whether a quoted length includes the flange, collar or end cap, and how much usable hand-contact surface remains. Check the available straight section and the space beside the throttle housing. Include your handguard arrangement in that discussion. Do not use a grip to extend the handlebar or assume that moving a housing inward will be harmless to the rest of the controls.
A lock-on example: ODI Rogue MX V2
ODI’s Rogue MX V2 includes a throttle tube with a snap-on cam and is intended to install without grip glue or safety wire. The manufacturer still directs buyers to the application guide: a necessary cam may not be included in a particular kit. The convenience of the attachment system does not make the cam selection universal. [3]
The lock-on example in this guide: ODI Rogue MX V2 Lock-On Grips · Black (Amazon paid link). Check ODI’s current application guide and confirm the required cam is in the kit or available separately. We may earn a commission from qualifying purchases.
ODI separately lists its V2 Snap-Cams for its V2 Lock-On systems and compatible Fusion throttle tubes. That is compatibility within specified systems, not permission to interchange any similarly shaped disc. Confirm the exact application and cam with ODI if your installed throttle is absent from the guide. [4]
Pattern and compound are another decision
Renthal currently lists the G089 MX Full Diamond Soft grip. Its name identifies a pattern and compound option; it is not evidence that it will cure hand fatigue or suit every glove. Use such product descriptions to build a shortlist, then compare the actual dimensions and installation requirements. [5]
Our suggestion is to compare tactile preferences with the gloves you ride in and describe them plainly: more or less pronounced texture, a different outside size, or a flange that leaves sufficient space. Treat manufacturer comfort language as a claim to assess, not a measured result from WrenchMoto. A grip that feels appealing in a shop still has to fit safely on the motorcycle.
Keep the installation system together
For its motorcycle glue-on grips, Renthal specifies its compatible grip glue and warns that other adhesives can react with the rubber. Follow the preparation and curing instructions for the actual grip-and-adhesive system. Do not transfer a glue-on procedure to a lock-on kit or improvise with an unspecified lubricant or solvent. [6]
Renthal’s MX Lock-On warnings require the specified cam, correct cam seating and proper throttle operation before starting the machine. They also call for inspecting the grip ends after a crash. Whatever system you choose, a loose grip or a throttle that does not function correctly is a reason to stop and resolve the fault before riding. [7]
Make the replacement easy to identify
Save the grip model, system version, cam reference and fitment confirmation with the bike’s records. Keep any component-specific instructions available for the next replacement. The useful upgrade is a securely fitted contact surface and correctly functioning throttle, with the pattern and dimensions you wanted. It is not a claim that one grip technology is best for every rider or every motorcycle.
Compare the installation systems
The ODI set uses a lock-on throttle-tube and cam system. The Renthal G089 is a conventional grip option. Choose the system that fits the parts actually installed on your motorcycle.
