What tire pressure should a dirt bike run?
Start with the instructions for your motorcycle and fitted tires, measured cold. There is no single pressure for every dirt bike. For example, Michelin lists 13.1 psi front and rear for its Starcross 6 with inner tubes, while Honda specifies 15 psi front and rear for the stock-tire setup in its 2020 U.S. CRF250F manual. These are different applications, not interchangeable settings. [1] [3]
Identify the setup before changing the number
Write down the bike’s model and year, both tire models and sizes, and whether the wheels use conventional tubes or another system. Then find the applicable bike and tire guidance. A foam insert has no valve pressure to set; other systems have their own instructions. An off-road pressure recommendation also does not automatically cover a road transfer on a dual-sport ride. [1] [2]
Make cold checks part of loading up
Check before riding with a gauge that reads clearly in the range you use. Seat its chuck squarely, take a stable reading, adjust and check again. Refit the valve cap. Michelin advises against bleeding a warm tire down to its cold target: the pressure rises with heat, so doing that can leave it too low after cooling. [1]
Build a useful setup record
A short note is more useful than a remembered number: date, cold front/rear pressures, tire setup, terrain and what you noticed. Change one variable at a time within the applicable manufacturer guidance. If a tire feels vague, first confirm the reading and inspect the tire and wheel rather than immediately letting out more air. A repeatable baseline makes later comparisons meaningful.
Do not use pressure to hide damage
A recurring loss needs inspection. Record how much pressure disappears and over what interval, so you can distinguish a setup experiment from a fault that needs attention. Avoid copying a racer’s number without knowing their tire construction and tube or insert arrangement. The useful question is whether a recommendation applies to your complete setup.
Your next ride checklist
Keep the relevant specification with your ride notes, use the same gauge, and check both tires cold before departure. If you cannot reconcile the motorcycle and tire instructions for an altered setup, ask the tire manufacturer about that exact fitment before experimenting.
