Start a skid-plate shortlist with your exact motorcycle model, model year and fitted accessories. Then compare coverage, mounting arrangements, clearance and maintenance access. A listing for a model family is only the starting point; the manufacturer’s application chart and accessory exclusions need to match the bike in your garage. [1] [3]
Coverage and mounting
Look at the underside and both sides in fitted photographs. AXP describes its AX1631 plate as covering the frame, engine cases and water pump, with rear linkage protection. Those are separate areas to check on any candidate. Decide which components you need covered before comparing material thickness or appearance. [1]
Read the mounting requirements before ordering additional guards. One SW-MOTECH CRF1100L Adventure Sports package, MSS.01.942.10001/B, includes a cross-brace kit for installation without crash bars and lists the original Honda crash bar as incompatible. Check the exact package and hardware list, especially when combining parts from different manufacturers. [3]
Clearance and maintenance access
Put clearance on your question list. SW-MOTECH says its bike-specific designs account for ground clearance, mounting connections and service areas. Ask the manufacturer what clearances apply with your exhaust, stands and other accessories. A catalogue photograph alone cannot establish compatibility with a modified motorcycle. [4] [2]
Check oil service separately from coverage. AXP says the AX1631 allows oil draining and oil-filter removal with the plate installed. For another design, look for equally explicit information: can you reach both the drain and filter, or must the plate come off? A visible opening is not a guarantee of complete service access. [1]
Older bikes deserve an extra fitment check. AXP warns that past modifications or repairs to vintage XR650Rs may require skid-plate adjustments. If the history is uncertain, show the supplier photographs and describe the changes before buying. Use the instructions for the specific part and motorcycle when arranging installation. [2] [3]
